Beautification

Beautification enhances the aesthetics of the environment for public use and enjoyment. The acts of gardening, planting trees, flowers, shrubs and combatting litter, all improve the quality of life and help foster connections among neighbors.

These actions not only enhance the area but also one’s well-being through physical exercise, decreasing stress, increasing stamina, and clearing the mind.

The Sullivan 180 Beautification Program offers grants for the care of public spaces in communities and schools. All programs require youth involvement.

The Beautification Program also provides a variety of resources for gardening and caring for public spaces. Check out the guides and videos below for more information.

Carmela Hugel, Beautification Program Manager

“The act of beautifying an area creates a sense of pride, accomplishment and enhances social interaction; it's also meditative and a great way to increase physical activity.” — Carmela Hugel, Beautification Program Manager

What Beautification Participants Are Saying

Gardening is one way to get exercise and appreciate nature. When you garden with others, you smile more and learn more. When you garden with others, you laugh more. Who doesn't like a good laugh?”

— Joyce Caracci, Smallwood Civic Association

“These initiatives often contribute to education, environmental awareness, and youth development, which are vital for the betterment of society. Getting involved not only beautifies the community but also enriches the lives of those who participate.

— Jodi Sibilla, Cochecton Volunteer Ambulance

“The sense of being part of something bigger than our little gardens, our desire to improve the area we live in, and the visible results of these efforts in ours and the surrounding towns has changed the outlooks of community members, raised hopes, and encouraged more community pride.”

— Marian Hosking, White Sulphur Springs Sullivan First
