Beautification

Beautification transforms public spaces into more inviting and enjoyable environments. Activities like gardening, planting trees, flowers, and shrubs, and addressing litter not only improve the aesthetics of an area but also enhance the quality of life by fostering community connections.

Engaging in beautification projects benefits both the community and individuals. It promotes physical activity, reduces stress, boosts stamina, and provides mental clarity.

The Sullivan 180 Beautification Program offers grants for the care of public spaces in communities and schools with a focus on youth participation.

The Beautification Program also provides a variety of resources for gardening and caring for public spaces. Check out the guides and videos below for more information.

“The act of beautifying an area creates a sense of pride, accomplishment and enhances social interaction; it's also meditative and a great way to increase physical activity.” — Carmela Hugel, Beautification Program Manager

What Beautification Participants Are Saying

Gardening is one way to get exercise and appreciate nature. When you garden with others, you smile more and learn more. When you garden with others, you laugh more. Who doesn't like a good laugh?”

— Joyce Caracci, Smallwood Civic Association

“The creation of a sensory garden added a valuable asset to our property, serving as a serene and educational space for everyone to enjoy. The garden not only beautified our surroundings but also provided a place for relaxation, sensory exploration, and environmental education. It has fostered a stronger sense of community and pride among those who visit and use the garden.”

— Jodi Sibilla, Cochecton Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

“Volunteering in Circle Park with Mrs. Hazen was a great experience. I loved seeing all the younger kids come running into the park with smiles and excited to be there to play.  I hope all kids have the same experience to help keep the park beautiful for generations to come.”

— Abby, youth volunteer, Town of Lumberland Parks & Recreation
