Annual International Overdose Awareness Day Vigil

25 Years On. Still Needed. ‍

Monticello, NY] – The 6th annual International Overdose Awareness DayVigil will be held on August 31 at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the Sullivan County Courthouse, 414 Broadway, Monticello.

International Overdose Awareness Day is a global campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died, acknowledge the grief of families and friends and support individuals in recovery.

The 2026 theme, “25 Years On. Still Needed.” reflects the continued impact of overdose on individuals, families and communities. It also carries a message of hope. Overdose is preventable, and access to care, education, support and lifesaving interventions can reduce harm and save lives.

“This event is a powerful reminder that recovery thrives through connection, compassion, and community,” said Jeffrey Spitz, Executive Director of Restorative Management. “By bringing people together to share stories, offer support, and inspire hope, we help break the stigma surrounding substance use and strengthen the path to recovery. It’s an experience that leaves every attendee with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility.”

Community members are invited to attend an evening of remembrance, reflection and hope. Families will share stories of loved ones lost to substance use, individuals in recovery will be recognized and local organizations will provide information about available resources. The evening will include music, local first responders and a candlelight vigil in front of the Sullivan County Courthouse, which will be illuminated in purple to symbolize overdose awareness. Attendees are invited to bring a photo of a loved one to include in the remembrance display.

“This vigil gives our community a meaningful opportunity to remember those we have lost, support individuals in recovery and stand with families affected by substance use,” said Anne-Louise Scandariato, Sullivan 180 Director of Community Engagement. “It also reminds us of the importance of reducing stigma, sharing resources and responding with compassion.”

Sullivan County continues to feel the impact of the overdose crisis. While progress has been made, continued prevention, treatment, recovery support and community collaboration remain essential.

The International Overdose Awareness Day Vigil is presented by a community of organizations working together to prevent overdose and support individuals and families affected by substance use in Sullivan County.
