Empowering a Healthier Generation Council
The Healthier Generation Council is hosted by Sullivan 180 and chaired by Sullivan County BOCES Superintendent, Dr. Robert Dufour.
Members include all School District Wellness Coordinators, Sullivan 180 Healthier Generation Advisors, and the School Resource Committee.
School District Wellness Coordinators
A District Wellness Coordinator is a federally mandated position; and is a district leader and/or school official(s) who has the authority and responsibility to ensure each school complies with the District Wellness Policy. They also lead the District Wellness Committee.
Led by the Wellness Coordinator, the role of the Wellness Committee is to facilitate participation of the general public and the school community (including parents/guardians, students, representatives of school food service, teachers of physical education, school nurses, mental health professionals, the school board, school administrators, and community resources) in the wellness policy process.
A wellness policy is a written document that guides a local school district’s efforts to establish a school environment that promotes students’ health, well-being, and ability to learn. The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, required that all schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program or other child nutrition programs create a local school wellness policy with goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and other school activities designed to promote student wellness and set nutrition standards for all foods available on school campuses. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act also requires schools to evaluate their wellness policies and report this information to the public.
