Over 1,000 Students engaged in the program
[LIBERTY, NY] Funded by county opioid settlement funds, Sullivan 180 recently presented motivational speaker Eddie Cortes to Sullivan County schools, engaging close to 1,250 middle and high school students from the Liberty, Monticello and Sullivan West school districts. Cortes shared his personal story and delivered a message of hope, resilience, and the importance of believing in themselves. Sullivan 180 intentionally focused the initiative on middle and high school students, recognizing that adolescence is a time when young people face increasing social, emotional, and mental health challenges.
Throughout his presentations, Cortes encouraged students to embrace challenges rather than be defined by them; believe in their own abilities and recognize that their potential is limitless. His central message reminded students that they are worthy of having and chasing their most “epic dreams.” Cortes encouraged students to think beyond their current circumstances and consider what is possible for their future.
“Seeing the students’ response to Eddie was something special,” said Mylene Ortiz, Youth Mental Health Program Manager at Sullivan 180. “The rooms were loud, energetic, and full of excitement. Students lined up afterward for autographs as if Eddie were a celebrity. But beyond the excitement, it was meaningful to see so many young people genuinely connected to his story and message. Creating these moments matters, because hope is something we have to intentionally nurture in young people, while also reminding them that growth, self-reflection, and the work they put into themselves can shape the future they want.”
Sullivan 180 remains committed to working alongside schools, families, and community partners to strengthen youth mental health, build resilience, and create opportunities that help young people feel connected, supported, and hopeful about their futures.
