Hands-on demonstration helps schools grow healthier outdoor spaces, one tree at a time.
[MONTICELLO, NY] Sullivan 180 recently hosted a hands-on tree demonstration at Kenneth L. Rutherford Elementary School in Monticello School District, bringing students, school administrators, facilities and community partners to learn about tree selection, planting, pruning, and care. The demonstration highlighted how thoughtful tree planting can create healthier, more welcoming outdoor spaces for students and their community.
Participants took part in the planting of two additional trees to their playground. They learned practical techniques for selecting the right tree for the right location, proper planting methods, pruning, and ongoing maintenance. Students joined their principal for a fun, hands-on planting experience while learning about the importance of trees on their school campus, how to care for them, and the lasting benefits they will provide for future generations of students.
“Trees are an investment in the future of our schools and communities,” said Carmela Hugel, Beautification Program Manager at Sullivan 180. “When we understand how to select, plant, and care for trees properly, we can create outdoor spaces that provide lasting benefits for generations to come. Demonstrations like this give participants the knowledge and confidence to make those investments successfully.”
Sullivan 180 encourages schools, municipalities, and community organizations interested in improving their outdoor spaces to explore Beautification grant opportunities and educational programming.
