Sullivan 180 Interns Working Together

Leadership Through Community Service

[Wurtsboro, NY] – The 2025 class of Sullivan 180 interns have spent the summer working side by side with community volunteers and municipal staff to care for public spaces across Sullivan County. Beyond gaining hands-on experience, the interns are exploring their leadership potential through weekly sessions that include discussions on current events, visits to Sullivan 180 projects, and opportunities to reflect on personal skills and leadership styles.

“Our goal is to provide young people with experiences that help them develop a sense of place and find their voice on issues that matter to them,” said Anne-Louise Scandariato, Sullivan 180 Director of Community Engagement. “Each year we are inspired by the energy and talent of youth from across Sullivan County. We hope this program leaves a lasting impression that carries them well beyond the summer.”

As part of their summer experience, the interns recently participated in a Day of Service at the Patricia Moore Memorial Picnic Grove at D&H Canal Linear Park in Wurtsboro. In partnership with the Town of Mamakating and the Wurtsboro Board of Trade, interns and Sullivan 180 staff worked to enhance and beautify this important community space. Their work included cleaning pathways, refreshing flower beds, and removing debris.

The Wurtsboro Fire Department provided a space to gather, enjoy lunch and regroup throughout the day. “This act of hospitality underscored the strong spirit of community on which the Day of Service was built upon,” said Anne-Louise Scandariato.

“Watching the interns demonstrate confidence and camaraderie while improving a community asset was truly heartwarming,” said Kelly DeGuzman, Vice President of the Wurtsboro Board of Trade. “It’s a reminder that people care. My hope is that the interns see the impact of their efforts and feel inspired to incorporate community service into their future endeavors.”

The Sullivan 180 Internship Program is designed to create opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and lead. By engaging in meaningful work, contributing to community projects, and connecting with local leaders, interns not only gain valuable skills but also come to see themselves as part of the future of Sullivan County.
